Anchor Steam Beer

California, 4.9% alc./vol.
Style: California Common

When Fritz Maytag bought the then-struggling Anchor Brewery in 1965, the young washing machine company heir started an American craft brewing renaissance. The brewery's massive success over the years has been due to Maytag's reintroduction of pre-prohibition recipes into the collective American consciousness. It began with their steam beer: one of only a few indigenous American beer styles. The use of a lager yeast here at warmer ale-brewing temperatures provides a crispness of character to an otherwise hearty beer that also features a round fruitiness and toasty malt profile.
